Brief Introduction

My research has focused on applying modern theories and methods of field investigation, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, and structural geology to tackle various geological problems, ranging from microscopic processes of mineral reactions during metamorphism, to macroscopic processes of assembly and breakup of supercontinents in Earth’s history. In particular, the over-arching theme of my research is the origin and evolution of high pressure-high temperature metamorphic belts in South China and North China, and their implications for lower crustal stability and continental evolution. This is progressed through integrated field, structural geology, geochronological and metamorphic pressure-temperature-time (P-T-t) studies of metamorphic terrains, particularly high temperature-high pressure terrains, which provide windows into the behavior of the deep crust during mountain building, and crustal accretion and growth. Within this context, my present research is principally directed into three achievements: 1) Accessory mineral behavior in HT-HP metamorphism, UHT metamorphism and their implications for geochronology and hence the timing and timescales of events in the deep crust; 2) The characterization, through detailed mineralogical-textural, thermodynamic study, of HT-HP and UHT metamorphism in general, and 3) Specific application of 1) and 2) to understanding the Precambrian geological evolution of South China and North China and their Columbia neighbor continents. Based on above, above 120 research papers with SCI citations of >7500 have been published in past years, of which 3 first-author papers are ESI ‘Highly Cited Papers’ in Geosciences.
